Tools, Ideas & Resources for Linguistics

This website has mainly been designed to promote & share good practice in teaching, as well as ideas and useful resources for, linguistics. As I have only set up this site very recently, it is likely to undergo a certain amount of restructuring for a while. Any constructive criticism and suggestions on how to improve its content are always appreciated ;-).

Course Materials

Introduction to English Linguistics: a general introduction to (English) linguistics, including interactive exercises.

English Phonetics & Phonology: a general introduction to phonetics & phonology, including facilities for online transcription practice through a variety of different exercises, as well as for creating printable HTML pages from an online transcription editor.

Practical Phonetics: a basic course in instrumental phonetics.

Tools for Language Analysis/Corpus Linguistics

The following are tools I have developed for various language analysis or annotation purposes. They are freely downloadable for non-commercial purposes under GPL licence. This section will be expanded, e.g. by adding more tools and more extensive descriptions, in due course.

ICEWeb: a small & simple utility for compiling, downloading & analysing web corpora. The name was chosen because the original intention was to create corpora that are similar in nature to the International Corpus of English (ICE) data.

The Text Feature Analyser: a tool for investigating textual features that may help in identifying & measuring issues related to text complexity.
